Project Healthy Community, along with the Michigan Muslim Community Council, Repair the World, Food Corps, Summer in the City, and the Jewish Community Relations Council, spearheaded a Mitzvah Makeover School Fix-Up Day at Schulze Academy (where our After School Program and FUN Pantry take place) this past April.
Together, we were able to recruit dozens of volunteers to help make Schulze a more beautiful and effective school. Volunteers helped organize Schulze's library, painted murals in the gym and cafeteria, set up a new tutorial center, prepared the classrooms for school, and beautified the outside of the school with new raised beds and plantings.
Schulze Academy is located in the Meyers and Curtis area of Detroit, formerly a neighborhood with a large Jewish population. Schulze Academy is home to 542 students, Pre-K through Sixth grade. This project was a follow-up to Mitzvah Day, where nearly 1,000 volunteers from Detroit’s Jewish community were joined by their Muslim neighbors to help Detroit area social service agencies at 43 different community sites on Christmas Day.
