Community
Programs

Our community offerings assist Detroiters by providing food, clothing and an array of other services through the Northwest Activities Center (NWAC). At PHC, we believe that nothing is as important as connecting people with resources for a happy, healthy life.

PHC maximizes the value of volunteerism and collaboration. This strategy of volunteer engagement and nonprofit partnerships have allowed PHC to keep its operating budget low by obtaining the wisdom and experience of community members.

Food Security

The first building block of creating a healthy community is addressing the basic needs of its neighbors. Food security is essential to maintain health. This principle was well understood by PHC’s co-founder Diane Rubenfire’s ז״ל, we continue to honor her memory by providing Detroiters greater access to healthy food.

Neighborhood Mobile Pantry
PHC’s Mobile Pantry is a collaboration with Gleaners Community Food Bank and Forgotten Harvest. We provide approximately a $100 worth of groceries and fresh vegetables from our community garden to 1,500 families a month. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mobile Pantry uses a Drive-Through model, allowing groceries to be placed in cars while minimizing contact. View the 2020 Schedule here.

NWAC Community Garden
Our Urban Garden provides food for the surrounding community and educates community members about the benefits of healthy eating through the My Garden™ curriculum. Volunteers help weed, plant, and harvest a variety of crops. We grow a range of crops using 100% organic practices, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. As a community garden we would love to hear your input on what crops we plant! Want to start your own garden? Check our our community partner: Keep Growing Detroit.
